beaches?

I just moved to the city from California and am wondering where people go to the beach. Any recs on nearby beaches for a day? Or where to go for a few days? Thanks.

The Beach for a Day

You can go to Long Beach on Long Island. The LIR train station in this town is a short walk to the beach. This is the simplest solution. A nicer day trip is to Ocean Beach, Fire Island. Take the LIR to Bay Shore, take a taxi (or walk 1/2 mile) to the ferry terminal, take a 25 minute ferry ride to the pristine beaches of Fire Island. The ferry schedules are located at www.fireislandferries.com. There are many F.I. towns, but Ocean Beach has the most services (including public bathrooms and restaurants).
