What is Attachment Parenting International? Attachment Parenting International (API) is an international non-profit organization, of which NYC API is a chapter, consisting of a small administrative headquarters and over 80 international parent support groups led by approved, volunteer, parent-peer leaders. API, founded 20 years ago, interpreted and continues to disseminate to parents the important psychological research findings of Attachment Theorists past and present. Prior to API’s organization, these important findings had been virtually hidden away in academic and clinical circles and unknown to most parents and professionals. What is Attachment Parenting? Not just for moms and newborns, Attachment Parenting is for all parents and children of every age. It is a style and philosophy of parenting that supports parents in building and maintaining healthy and nurturing relationships, known as secure attachments, with their children. The Attachment Parenting philosophy is based on over 50 years of research that very clearly demonstrates the critical impact of early, cumulative relational patterns and experiences on a person’s overall mental health and general ability to succeed in life. Who attends the NYC API meetings? Parents and their children of all ages and circumstances attend our meetings. When are the NYC API meetings? Our meetings are held in various accessible downtown locations and are posted in advance on our group calendar with other details at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/API-NYC/ Our Yahoo Group provides 24/7 contact with other parents between meetings (usually when parenting crisis strikes!) and is especially helpful l to parents who cannot attend the meetings. How much does it cost to attend the meetings? A virtual rarity in NYC our meetings are entirely free. Some meetings featuring Guest Presenters may require small non-member fees to cover the cost of the Presenter and meeting space. NYC API Membership and Benefits Annual NYC API membership is $35 and can be paid at any meeting in cash or by check made to NYC API. Payments can also be mailed to Art Yuen 62 Cooper Square #7B NYNY 10003. Benefits include free NYC API events + quarterly API Journals published by headquarters. What happens at the meetings? While most meetings focus on a parenting topic that we address from the API perspective, we make time to meet everyone and answer as many specific questions as we can.
