Hi everyone- I wanted to let you all know about an effort underway in New York to pass a law guaranteeing moms 12 weeks of paid time off to take care of a new baby. It's crazy that with so many parents both working these days we don't already have this law - and in fact the US is one of only five countries in the world that doesn't have paid family leave. This year the Paid Family Leave Coalition is teaming up with the Working Families Party to pass a family leave insurance law. Part of what we need is for our elected officials to know this law is important to us. I just sent an email to my Assemblymember from the Working Families Party web site, can you send one too? The difference between this bill and FMLA is FMLA provides unpaid leave, so most people who are eligible to take time off and want to can't afford to. This new bill would cover everyone who works and provide paid leave, so it would cover more people and help more people.
